MW Review: Blacktail Studio

Blacktail Studio is, by almost any measure, one of the most successful woodworking channels.

Sample Videos

Published October 18, 2018. This may not be the first epoxy table build, but it’s the first one I saw, and I was blown away! Epoxy tables were wildly popular during COVID. YouTube is littered with videos of people using all kinds of epoxy colors and all kinds of materials. But for me, this video of Cam making a huge walnut dining table with black epoxy stands as one of the earliest and best. Don’t miss part two!

Published January 25, 2024. Five years later, Cam decided to experiment with denim. That’s right, an epoxy table made of denim fabric! And yes, Cam, Blacktail Studio is the most popular epoxy and denim table channel on YouTube. 😉

Published February 14, 2025. Cam delivers a table to a woman who was scammed out of $17,000 that she thought she was paying to Blacktail Studio, and has some fun with the scammer along the way. The video was enlightening, entertaining, and heartwarming – bravo!

Video Production

Cam has an employee named Scott whose primary role is to produce the videos. Over time, Scott has picked up a lot of woodworking knowledge, so you’ll occasionally see him come out from behind the camera to help.

I give a lot of credit to Cam for his vision and skill as a woodworker, and of course, for being the primary talent in the videos, but Scott gets most of the credit. The production values of Blacktail Studio videos are very high. There are lots of close-ups and angles to see how everything is done. The mix of live audio and voiceovers is terrific.

Also, the two of them have a comfortable relationship in which they frequently bounce ideas off each other. Scott isn’t afraid to question why Cam is doing something, and Cam isn’t afraid to ask the cameraman for woodworking advice. They sprinkle in appropriate amounts of humor and emotion – the finished product is very real and relatable.

On a related note, the video about the age gap between him and his girlfriend is priceless!

Content

I haven’t watched every Blacktail Studio video, but I’m pretty sure I’ve watched most. And like most long-running channels, the content has gradually shifted. In the beginning, the videos focused on epoxy tables and everything related. Buying the slabs, building the forms, working with resin, finishing the table, adding legs, etc. You’ll find videos about tools and his shop, but those are fillers. Epoxy tables were and are the main attraction.

Over time, however, more non-epoxy table content has been published. He restored a Japanese hand saw, showed woodshop injuries in slow motion (12 million views and counting, by the way), and did a deep dive on internet scams (video linked above). He also created an online course on how to make epoxy tables, and I think I read or heard somewhere that the course is his largest revenue driver. Most recently, he purchased a large barn that was used to process marijuana plants. I’m looking forward to a series of videos of him turning that into a new workshop.

Conclusion

Blacktail Studio logo

At the time of this post, Blacktail Studio is in the top 10 across several metrics: subscribers, views, views per video, and subscribers per month. Cam and Scott are absolutely killing it! Epoxy tables might be yesterday’s fad, but there are plenty of people still watching these videos.

Final grade: A+
