MW Review: Geetery Acacia Charcuterie Board

A laser-engraved charcuterie board is only as good as the board itself.

Why I bought a charcuterie board

At about this time last year, I did a few dozen laser-engraved charcuterie boards for Teacher Appreciation Week. That was the first time I’d done custom charcuterie boards.

Since then, I’ve done several more for friends and family as well as for customers and prospects. A laser-engraved charcuterie board is always a hit.

The Good Stuff

  • Attractive Wood Grain. Acacia has a prominent natural grain. The color is darker than cherry and lighter than walnut. As you’d expect, the finished boards are made from smaller boards that are glued together. The result is a very attractive board with lots of grain and character.
  • Weight and Thickness. Each charcuterie board is about 11 ounces, which is enough to impart a sense of quality in your hand. It’s a combination of the density of acacia and the 0.6-inch thickness. I personally think bamboo is too light for this application. I tried some 0.5-inch thick boards, but they felt cheaply made and I returned them.
  • Ease of Use. I love that the boards come individually wrapped in cellophane. It allows me to buy in bulk and not have to worry about extras sitting on a shelf and drying out while waiting for the next customer.

The Bad Stuff

  • Quality Control. In my experience, about 1 in 24 boards has a minor defect. It’s usually a small split in the seam where two boards meet.
  • Consistency of engraving. Cherry, for example, has a uniform grain that allows lasers to achieve very consistent engravings. That’s why cherry is great for large and/or very detailed laser engravings. That’s not true of Acacia. The grain is sometimes hard, sometimes soft; sometimes light, sometimes dark. This means laser engravings can also be inconsistent. But for this application – small charcuterie boards with even smaller engravings (typically a logo), acacia is perfectly acceptable.

Conclusion

The Geetery Acacia Charcuterie Board is one of the go-to materials for Moto Woodworks. I always keep a few in stock because they make for great gifts (especially when packaged with wine) and are reasonably priced.
